Model Training Course on Integrated Nutrient Management started

Every living organism in the world takes rest for a while on certain interval, but it is the soil who never sleeps and continuously provide all essential nutrition to crop for growth & development. Now soil health & fertility is in crisis, urgent intervention is needed to address this, otherwise it will be too late to protect & sustain productivity of crops. This was said by Dr. S. Solomon, Director, Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow while inaugurating a Model training course on Integrated Nutrient Management for improving soil fertility & crop productivity in the Institute. There is continuous degradation is soil health & fertility level & in some pocket organic carbon (responsible for soil health) decreased to alarming level of 0.25%, which is matter of concern for all of us. Immediate attention is needed to lower dose of chemical fertilizers and farmers need to be educated on application of organic matter, bio fertilizer, green manure and crop residues along with inorganic fertilizers. Research institutes like IISR has developed techniques of integrated nutrient management, but least adopted by the farmers in the fields and as a result unscrupulous use of inorganic leads to infertility in soil and soil health reached to level of alarming or intensive care situations. Development officials of state governments should be trained in advance techniques of soil health management and they should implement campaign for large scale adoption by farmers. In this context an 8 days model training course sponsored by Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India is being organised at IISR (October 13-20, 2014). In this training, officials of agriculture and cane department, Govt. of UP and Krishi Vigyan Kendras are participating. According to Course Director, Dr. S. K. Shukla participating officials will be imparted practical knowledge and information on all aspects of soil health & fertility management and know-how in mechanised cane cultivation, vermi composting, bio control of sugarcane diseases and pests, micro nutrient and their deficiency symptoms, organic cane farming will be also provided. Media Incharge and Principal Scientist Dr. A. K. Sah informed that Institute is implementing an intensive programme on making soil health cards in each sugar mill zone of UP through scientific soil test being done at IISR lab after collecting samples from each mill zone. Different outreach programme including regular training of sugar mill personnel is being organised by the Institute to transfer valuable information on soil health & fertility management. IISR is also emphasising on use of Modern IT tools to propagate information on latest cane cultivation techniques among farmers and development officials.
